Yasaka Shrine: Japan {Travel Tuesday}

The last few weeks, I've been taking Tuesdays to step back in time to share the UK with you guys. Today I want to take a break and share a bit more of Japan. Yesterday, I shared the Fushimi Inari Shrine and today I'll take you to the Yasaka Shrine.

This was once called Gion Shrine and is a Shinto shrine in the Gion District of Kyoto. If you are walking along Shijo-dori you will not be able to miss it as it's right on the main intersection and it's bright orange!

This was one of our surprise adventures we encountered while staying in Japan. Originally, our plan was to go to Fushimi and then wander around Gion until our En tea experience (post to come later), but we found ourselves with some extra time and we saw that there was tons to see in the Gion district. This was the first of our 'wandering' adventures and we loved it.

Yasaka Shrine was the first we saw, and it was beautiful. It's smaller than Fushimi, but not any less wonderful. I absolutely love the orange and green combination.  The shrine was built around 656 and was one of the major shrines during the Heian period. {Source}

I'm sure if you're going to Kyoto, Gion will be on your to see list. Well, Yasaka Shrine is smack dab in the middle, so it will be easy to add this to your list.
