Friday Flashback #64

Four years ago, I was in my first weeks of my study abroad to London, England. Four years- has it really been that long.

 I feel like it was just yesterday when I met the always bubbly Brittany and her sister Ashael, two of my future roommates, and they helped me carry my suitcases up six flights of London stairs. The whole time Brittany was just chatting away, and I was just awestruck at how awesome the BYU London Centre was, and how lucky I was to be there.

When I made it to the top of the stairs, out of breathe might I add, to what literally was called the Attic room- I could not be happier. There were only 6 beds and we had our own bathroom! Yippee! It was then that I met Jenny and Elliot, two more of my roommates. We were just missing Sarah who would be arriving in the morning. Elliot was a little less bubbly than Brittany, but a lot less scary than Jenny. Because let's be honest Jenny scared the crap out of me, and for the first week I was convinced she hated me. {Those that lived in the attic see the irony in that statement now.} When I met Sarah I thought, okay- so this is the nicest person ever... quick don't be mean! I instantly loved all these girls and wanted to be their best friends... except Jenny- I just didn't want her to kill me. :)

{Sarah, Brittany, Ashael, Elliot, Jenny, Me}

I wanted to talk about meeting these girls because these are friendships that have stayed with me these last four years. We were the Attic girls and we became close friends- one of the main reasons probably because by the time we climbed the 100 stairs to our room we were too lazy to go climb back down just to socialize. :) I truly believe it was because of these friendships that I had such a blast during my study abroad.

Of course, we got annoyed with each other, of course there were fights, of course my chapstick and babushka were constantly dropping onto Sarah's bunk in the middle of the nigh, of course I thought it was strange Ashael had a Jonas Brothers poster hanging up :) ... that's what being roommates is all about. But I am so happy and so grateful that I was assigned the smallest room in the centre. I was assigned just 5 other roommates, and we became close.

For anyone reading that is thinking about study abroad, I would so encourage it. And I bet if you ask any of these girls, they would too. I am friends with most of the girls I went to London with on Facebook and I see that all of them are still in contact with at least one person in the program. These programs build friendships that last forever. They are very similar to college relationships you build, but I would argue a bit stronger because you are thrown in a foreign country with just each other. Go study abroad. Go meet your Jenny, Elliot, Sarah, Brittany, and Ashael! You really won't regret it.

 {At Mary Arden's Farm. Sarah "It's like Shakespeare Disneyland!"}

{This is one of my favorite pictures of us.}

I am so happy I met these girls and that we continue our friendship to this day.
What do you say about a reunion sometime soon? {PS- Elliot, Are you aware you are the only one I haven't seen since London! What's up with that?}

I know this wasn't a typical Friday Flashback, but London has been on my mind. I know I am in Korea, and it's great, but it's no London. And for those of you interested, I will be sharing more about the good ole London days on Travel Tuesdays so get ready!

For those that have done a study abroad do you recommend it? What are your thoughts? Please share!

Friday Flashback #63

This is what birthdays look like in Hawaii.

I wanted to dedicate this flashback to my former students. I miss my students so much. As much as I love being here, I kinda wish I was in Hawaii to see them moving on to 8th grade.

This was taken on one of the last days of school and it made me laugh so hard.

People here go all out for any special occasion! And I love that about Hawaii.

{Note: I blocked out my student's face to protect her privacy.}

Friday Flashback #62

The last few weeks I have been sharing pictures because I haven’t had any ideas for stories to share. Boy do I have one for you today!

If you didn't know, I love Maxi dresses and skirts. They are so comfortable, but they are nice enough to wear out or to work. You can really do anything with a Maxi.

Including get stuck in an escalator.

Yup, it happened.

Did you ever seen the episode of Modern Family where Claire gets her coat stuck in the escalator and she's naked underneath? This story is kinda like that.

{image via

A while back, Matt and I were at a mall in Hawaii and needed to go down the escalator. As I stepped off the escalator I realized something was not coming with me. My skirt had gotten stuck in the escalator. I panicked immediately and yelled for Matt who was a few steps ahead of me.

I think I said something like “I’m stuck!”

Matt had to come back and grab my skirt out of the gears of the escalator. There were all these people just looking at me and laughing. And what was weird was that the guy behind me just pushed past me- he didn’t even try to help!

Finally Matt was able to free my skirt and I was saved! I guess I am just lucky that my skirt didn’t tear off and leave me standing in my underwear in front of Windward mall. And I am really lucky that Matt was there to help me. If not, I probably would have been standing there in my underwear.

Do you have any really embarrassing stories like this? I would love to hear your embarrassing stories- please share!

Friday Flashback #61

My father-in-law sent me this picture today

{This is Malia and Matt when they were younger.}

Does Matt remind you of anyone?

So strange that my husband and brother looked so much alike!

Too Cute!

Friday Flashback #59

Look at these kids! They were so little. When I was home this trip, it was very obvious that these kids are no longer my little babies. Oh how time flies.

Friday Flashback #58

Last week, I was able to go to the annual Asian Baby Reunion
{blog post to come about this year's reunion.}

If you are confused, I'll explain. Nine years ago my parents adopted Olivia from China. From then on, there has been an annual reunion for the girls that were adopted in the same group and region as Olivia. The parents of the girls decided they always wanted to get together so the girls had a tie to their past.

I have not been able to go to this reunion since 2009, and I could not believe how big the girls got, and how many more members have been added to the group.

I thought I would flashback to some of the reunions so you can see the change. I don't have all the pictures from all the years, but here's what I have.

Reunion 2008 - Georgia
Age 5

{From left to right: Katie May, Juliet*, Charlotte, Olivia, KC}

{Margie, Olivia, Katie May, Charlotte, KC}

Reunion 2009- California
Age 6

{Olivia, Margie, KC, Charlotte, Juliet*}

Reunion 2013- Missouri
Age 10

{Back row: Juliet, Olivia, Charlotte, Emily. Middle: KC. Front: Margie, Moira*, Katie May}

{Back Row: Me, Aiden, Shane (Margie and Mora's siblings), Hank, Mary Kate*
Middle: Margie, KC, Olivia, Emily, Katie May
Front: Charlotte, Alex*, Khole*, Jud*, Moira*, Juliet, Juliet*}

Look how much these girls have grown, and how big our group has gotten. There were 15 in the group that Olivia was adopted in and many of the families that adopted once went and adopted again.

Friday Flashback #56

Okay I actually wasn't here for this flashback, but I still find this picture really funny.

When Beth was in town last year, I was still coaching lacrosse. So during one of my practices I had Matt take Beth down to the Waikiki strip and have her tour around. On their way, they ran into this guy that has a few parrots that you can take pictures with.

I guess the guy thought the two of them were a couple, so he had them pose in different ways with the parrots. When they explained they weren't married and in fact Beth was my best friend- I think the parrot guy thought that they were cheating on me.

Oh good times on Waikiki strip.

This is one of my favorite pictures of all times.

Friday Flashback #55

In honor of Jessie and Jake being in town, I thought I would find a memory of me with my cousins.

In 2006, I went to New York with my Aunt Nickie and my cousin Jessie. We had a great time, and there were a lot of memories - but there's one I want to share:

One night we headed back to the hotel and all of a sudden my stomach just started hurting. Like really really bad. I thought I was going to die! The pain was so bad I just like fell to the ground and started to crawl {partly because I am dramatic and partly because the pain was really bad when I was standing up.}

My aunt, being the nice person she is, snapped these pictures while laughing at me.

Thanks Nickie.

Friday Flashback #53

A few weeks ago I finally updated my license from an UNDER 21 license to an OVER 21 license.

... About 4 years after the fact.

While doing this, it reminded me of a funny thing that happened to me when I was a freshman in high school.

One day my mom was getting money out of the ATM and while I was waiting in the car I happened to look at her license. While looking I saw that it said Organ Donor.

And I was like Oh my gosh... My mom's an organ donor! How did I not know this!

So when she got back in the car I was holding her license and asked: MOM- what organ did you donate!?!

... I was dead serious....

And I didn't quite understand why she was laughing so hard.

When she finally got herself under control she explained what an organ donor was.

OHHHHHHHH, so you didn't donate an organ?

Opps. I wish I could blame it on age, but I was 14! I think I should have known that fact.

What funny things do you have to share? Has anyone had any blonde moments?

Friday Flashback #52

Well, today's my birthday! (Happy Birthday to me.)

I am now 25! Whoa I really can't believe. I don't think I'm old, but it is crazy that I am 25!

In honor of this, I thought I would Flashback to my last 5 birthdays and share what was going on.

Here we go:

2008-20th Birthday
This year we had a decades party because my Abuela was turning 60, my Mom was turning 40, and I was hitting 20. Of course this was spent with my family and my best friend Beth.

2009- 21st Birthday
This year Beth and I got lunch at Panera's with the little kids and Joe. We got pedicures and then we went over to Abuela and Papa's for dinner. Abuela got us a Piñata and we had tons of fun. This birthday included the missionaries and non-alcholic champagne.

2010- 22nd Birthday
This was the first year Matt was part of the picture. (Although I have no pictures with him.) Again this was spent with family and Beth. I remember Janice got me a cook book and I thought 'well great she wants me to learn how to cook!'... Still hasn't happened!

2011- 23rd Birthday
This year was my first birthday married to Matt, but I spent in thousand of miles away in D.C. Luckily, I was able to meet up with Jenny and she took me around town. Plus, I got Georgetown cupcakes.

2012- 24th Birthday
I got to spend this birthday with Matt. We had a great beach/ pool day and it was awesome. We celebrated at Hard Rock that night and had such a great time. Matt continued the tradition of my birthday doughnut and made my day.

2013- 25th Birthday
Again, Matt and I spent my birthday apart. But he sure did work hard to make sure my birthday was great (more to come on that later). I went to work and had a great day with my students and my cousins Josh and Ari.

Well, the good news is I don't think I've really aged physically.
These past five years have brought so many fun memories.

Friday Flashback #51

I was trying to think of a really funny story for you guys, but I just couldn't think of one.

So I have some pictures that I think are pretty dang funny.

Now let me explain. My first year of college Beth and I decided to go visit my Aunt and cousins down in Florida. Beth and I thought this would also be a great time to pick up another friend from high school, Elise. Elise was attending Valdosta State, which was on our way to Florida, so it was perfect.

We had a GREAT weekend. My aunt was planning a town festival and the three of us had a blast making cotton candy, and playing on the large bouncy houses.

One night my aunt put us in charge of my cousins and their friends and this is what we ended up doing.

Dressing up of course!

I wanted to share these pictures because I find them hilarious and because my cousin Jessie graduated from high school this past weekend! I can't believe she is the same age as I am in these pictures! I feel so old!

{PS- if you have any ideas for stories to share leave your comments!}

Friday Flashback #50

I can't believe this is my 50th Friday Flashback! That's a lot of flashback memories.

Since it's my 50th one I thought I would share a really good story with you.

When I was in 3rd grade we lived in a neighborhood close to the elementary school I went to, and my mom would make we WALK to school by MYSELF!

I don't think it's that far, maybe a mile, but as a 8 year old it seemed like the longest walk in the world!

As you can imagine, I would get really bored on these walks home, so I got creative.

I would take the mail from one mail-box and then distribute it to other mail-boxes along my walk. Then once I ran out of mail, I would grab some more from another box and continue that until I got home.

And I thought it was the coolest way to spend my time. I had no idea I was an 8 year old committing a felony! I probably ruined a few people's lives, and maybe even got a mailman fired! I did this for a whole year and no one knew about it until I told Matt and my mom a few months ago.

Oops.

So the moral of this story is- don't let your kids walk home alone!

Also, to any law enforcement that my be reading this... I was only 8! Please don't arrest.

Happy 50th Flashback Y'all! What'd ya think?

Friday Flashback #49

I know this is not about me, but how cute was this kid?

{Matt and Kevin I would say circa 1988-9?}

I just hope our babies come out as cute as Matt did.

Friday Flashback # 47

Sorry these Flashbacks have been MIA the last couple of weeks, but they are back and better than ever!

Happy Alex

Mad Alex

This pretty much sums up my personality.

My mom tells me these pictures were taken as we were driving from Germany to France when my Abuela and Uncle Doug were visiting.

I guess I was not used to the attention being taken away from me because every time my Abuela tried to talk to my mom I would say:

Momma, momma, momma, momeeeeeeeeeea!

And my mom would turn around and say: What Alex?

And I would be silent. Then she would talk again to my Abuela where I promptly said:

Momma, momma, momma, momeeeeeeeeeea!

Oh how things don't change. I still like being the picture and not the frame!

Friday Flashback #45

In Honor of Easter:

Look at that all blue sweat-suit. Even then I liked to be comfortable!

I think I remember being really confused during this egg hunt. I think my Aunt Nickie had to help me out.
