DMZ: Revisited {Local Adventures}

Happy Thursday Y'all!

I hope your week is going well. Matt and I are getting ready for our 3 day weekend trip to Soraksan National Park- we are so excited to be exploring a little more of Korea.

Today I wanted to share a trip we took back when my dad was visiting from California. The number 1 thing my dad wanted to see was the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), so we signed up for another through Koridoor Tours

{We went on a trip to the DMZ last year, so if you want a more detailed account- click here.}

Our tour included stops to: USO, Unification Bridge, Camp Bonifas at JSA, Freedom House, Conference Room, Check Point 3, Point of Ax Murder, Bridge of No Return, DMZ Theater and Museum, 3rd Infiltration Tunnel, Dorasan Observatory, and the Dorasan Station. Plus lunch at a "Korean Restaurant" which was about 10,000 Won per meal.

Last trip- we weren't able to see the Point of the Ax Murder or the Bridge of No Return, so it was nice to see some things we didn't see last time.

 There were tons of North Korean guards walking around their buildings.
The grey buildings belong to the North Koreans, and the blue are the ROKs.

{This guard is on the North Korean side of the JSA. We enjoyed stepping into North Korea for the second time.}

This was the first glimpse we got into North Korea. You can tell where the North starts because all the trees end. And by the blue building you can see the start of the Bridge of No Return between the North and the South.

 {The big metal thing in the middle is the North Korean flag pole. The flag is 160 Meters tall.}

 Bridge of No Return

Dorasan Station- This trip, we paid the 500 Won to go out onto the train platform. This station is the last stop in South Korea and it leads to the North. It's a way for the people to hope for the future unification.

I enjoyed this tour just as much as the first time I went. This time I actually went down into the 3rd tunnel, and I'm so glad I did. It was pretty interesting/ scary to see how close the North got to tunneling their way into the South. And the hike back up really isn't that bad- if I can make it- you can too.

If you are in the ROK for a trip, I would recommend taking a tour of the DMZ and JSA Area. We've enjoyed both tours we've gone on and it's just one of those places you can't pass up.

  1. What an interesting and terrible place to visit. I still find it hard to believe that they let people get so close, but why not, I guess?

    1. The tour idea is a little bizarre, but I still think it's a place you have to visit when coming to Korea. It is very informative and it helps understand the conflict in a different light.
